Process Chemist

Founded in 1869, Robinson Brothers is one of the UK's largest independent chemical manufacturers of speciality/fine chemicals and rubber accelerators. We offer a wide range of custom-manufactured intermediates on a commercial scale from kilograms to multi-tonnes, all produced to the highest possible quality and environmental standards.

Our technology is built upon expertise in catalytic hydrogenation and organo-sulfur chemistry. Today we offer an extensive range of sophisticated chemistries by handling challenging reagents, such as Carbon disulfide, Chlorosulfonic acid, Phosgene, Bromine, Hydroxylamine and Dimethyl sulfate. In addition, our unit process portfolio includes Diels Alder and Freidel Crafts reactions, vacuum distillation and cyclisation to produce heterocyclic molecules.

Scope of the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Process Chemist to join our Technical and Innovation team. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to gain hands-on experience in chemical manufacturing and process development. Reporting to the Technical and Innovation Manager, you will work closely with colleagues across departments including Production, Engineering, Quality, and R&D, to support the optimisation of existing processes and assist in the introduction of new products. This role offers excellent scope for learning and professional development in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in identifying and evaluating opportunities for process improvement in collaboration with the Production department.
  • Participating in Process Improvement Groups and supporting the use of the Britest Toolkit to guide decision-making.
  • Conducting laboratory-based experiments to support proposed process changes.
  • Providing support during the implementation of process changes, ensuring they are executed safely and effectively.
  • Helping to analyse production data and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
  • Contributing to troubleshooting production issues such as process deviations or yield losses, under supervision.
  • Supporting the scale-up of new products from laboratory or pilot plant to full-scale production.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation for process changes and control procedures.
  • Promoting safe working practices and maintaining good housekeeping standards in the workplace.
  • Receiving training and development opportunities, including potential involvement in process safety assessments and customer communication as your experience grows.

Essential Criteria

  • A degree (BSc or equivalent) in Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • A strong interest in chemical manufacturing and process development.
  • Good understanding of fundamental chemical principles and reaction mechanisms.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and an understanding of chemical drawing software.
  • Willingness to learn and develop within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work on a COMAH site and pass an enhanced DBS check.

Desirable Criteria

  • Master’s degree (MSc, MChem) in a relevant discipline.
  • Industrial placement or internship experience in a manufacturing or lab environment.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or BRITEST.
  • Basic understanding of process safety, regulatory compliance (REACH, COSHH), or analytical techniques.
  • Awareness of control systems or data analysis tools.
  • Interest in working towards professional accreditation (e.g., Chartered Chemist status).
