Evaluating Process Safety in Chemical Manufacturing

Robinson Brothers has recently enhanced hazard screening capabilities with the addition of an Atlas HD Calorimeter.

Process safety is paramount in chemical manufacturing. To operate safely, a chemical reaction must be comprehensively evaluated to identify drivers and potential consequences of these reactions. Robinson Brothers has invested heavily in a fully-equipped Process Hazard Screening Laboratory. All stages of a manufacturing process are rigorously screened for any reaction hazards and process safety prior to scale-up manufacturing in the Kilo-Laboratory and/or Pilot Plant. This means the time to market new products is significantly reduced.

The Atlas HD Calorimeter can perform Heat Flow Calorimetry (HFC) or Power Compensation Calorimetry (PCC). The calorimeter allows the simple configuration of reaction temperatures and dosing quantities.

“The flexibility of carrying out HFC and PCC studies makes this calorimeter a great addition to the process hazard screening laboratory”, said Joe Henderson – Process Safety and Efficiency Specialist. With a background of working as a Research Chemist, Joe understands the importance of having effective reaction scanning tools that provide accurate data.

Robinson Brothers Process Hazard Screening Laboratory uses various scanning tools, such as:

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
  • Advanced Reactive System Screening Tool (ARSST)
  • Adiabatic Calorimetry
  • Heat Flow Calorimetry (HFC) or Power Compensation Calorimetry (PCC)
