Hand Sanitiser: Production, Science and Use

Undoubtedly, hand sanitiser has become one of the most in demand products of the year. Whether at work, school or the supermarket, hand sanitiser has become a necessary staple in our lives.

In response to significant supply constraints during the COVID-19 pandemic, Robinson Brothers has proudly produced 1000L of hand sanitiser so far for employees, the local community and healthcare providers free of charge. Future projections for hand sanitiser production are 5000L.

Just one of the many responses we have received from donations to local healthcare providers:

“Thank you for your very kind donation of hand gel for our Immunology lab at Russels Hall Hospital.

It has been much appreciated by our staff here!”

Hand sanitiser is an effective way of killing bacteria on our hands when using soap and water is not available. Using alcohol-based hand sanitiser is a quick and easy way to destroy harmful microorganisms that may end up on our hands. Importantly, hand sanitiser prevents further transmission of these microorganisms.

Robinson Brothers has been able to manufacture hand sanitiser in accordance to guidelines from the World Health Organisation. The ingredients are ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol and water.

Glycerol is used as a humectant, a substance used to retain moisture to enable application when needed without damaging the skin. Moreover, hydrogen peroxide is used to interfere and destroy contaminating bacterial spores.

Robinson Brothers will continue to monitor the pandemic and take appropriate action in guidance with government advice. The company has thought of novel ways to create a safe working environment for all. Read more about one of the proactive measures taken here.
