  • In The Know Thailand Mandates Tis 969 2562 2019 As The New Standard For Baby Pacifiers

In the know: Thailand mandates TIS 969-2562 (2019) as the new standard for baby pacifiers

Thailand’s Ministry of Industry has reported Standard TIS 1025-2562 (2019) for pacifiers will become effective on 13 December 2021.

This standard contains requirements relating to the materials, manufacturing, packaging and product information for baby pacifiers. Having such standard provides a method of improving manufacturing systems and processes with the aim of improving the safety and quality of baby pacifiers. TIS 1025-2562 (2019) requires pacifiers to conform to certain chemical tests concerning the release of N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances.

The Safety Concern
Rubber pacifiers contain rubber accelerators to give the rubber its shape, flexibility, strength and durability. Some manufacturers use traditional rubber accelerators, such as thiazoles (MBTS/MBT) and thiurams (TMTD), which have been identified to leave toxic residues in baby pacifiers. They also generate highly toxic nitrosamines during the manufacturing process. Effects of exposure to nitrosamines can include a Type IV allergies (skin contact dermatitis) which can be uncomfortable and painful for the child.

The Robac Technology Solution
As regulations tighten, manufacturers of baby pacifiers may wish to identify safer alternatives to traditional rubber accelerators. Robinson Brothers’ Robac Technology product range includes nitrosamine-safe rubber accelerators. One particular rubber accelerator, Robac AS100, was specifically engineered to be completely consumed during rubber vulcanisation in order to prevent the generation of toxic nitrosamines. No residue, no hazard, no risk.

Robac Technology products Robac AS100 and Robac Arbestab Z are accelerators used to produce rubber toys, and which comply with the BS EN 71:2016 Safety of Toys Standard and BS EN 12868:2017 Child Use and Care Articles Standard for N-Nitrosamines and N-Nitrosatable substances. Robac AS100 has been successfully trialled in the manufacture of baby pacifiers, teats and rubber toys.
