Robinson Brothers on Screen: Supporting career development in chemical manufacturing

This week, the UK is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2019. #NAW2019

Apprenticeships offer valuable on-the-job training coupled with classroom studying. This is an ideal career development opportunity for school leavers who want to gain an insight into the real job world, whilst gaining essential knowledge and skills to allow them to access such careers.

Robinson Brothers has a history of supporting young individuals in the development of their careers within chemical manufacturing. The company is currently working with Halesowen College to support apprentices within Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. These apprentices have already successfully completed their Level 1 and Level 2 HNC qualification, and are now working towards their Level 4 HNC. Robinson Brothers has decided to continue this investment in their Engineering workforce to ensure these individuals continue to develop vital skills to carry out their job duties with confidence. In addition to this, HNC in Engineering will provide the knowledge required to keep Robinson Brothers’ manufacturing plants operating at maximum efficiency.

Robinson Brothers also supports undergraduate placement programs. This is enabled through working partnerships with: University of Birmingham, University of Wolverhampton and Aston University. Robinson Brothers has supported such schemes to train young professionals within their Engineering and Science divisions to develop the next generation of workers.

In the video clip below, meet Manjit Dhesi, who originally joined Robinson Brothers as a Research Chemist after completing her studies at Aston University. Manjit soon went on to become Senior Research Chemist, and then decided to take a secondment role in production. “I decided to take this secondment to develop an understanding of scale-up manufacturing and the link between research & development and production”.

After completing this secondment, Manjit decided to take on a permanent role in production as she enjoyed the cross-functional element of the role – working with R&D, engineering, sales, safety, health and environment to ensure new manufacturing campaigns ran smoothly and safely. “Your days were never the same; there was always a new challenge to solve. Working closely with the Operators was a real-eye opener, which helped me gain management skills along with knowledge of the production plants”. Manjit is currently Deputy Cell 1 Manager at Robinson Brothers.
