Exploring Chemistry at Work: Research Chemists host an interactive workshop at the BCLM

As part of Chemistry at Work week 2019, at the Black Country Living Museum, Robinson Brothers hosted a workshop for Key Stage 3/4 students to learn about chemistry.

This annual event aims to highlight the chemical heritage of the Black Country region, tagged-on with learning about chemistry. Research Chemists, Dr Jagjit S. Khera and Joe Henderson, delivered chemistry workshops to young students attending from local schools.

2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table.  Similarly, 2019 is also a special year for Robinson Brothers as the chemical manufacturer celebrates 150 year in business.  Robinson Brothers remains to be a family-owned organisation based in the Black Country region since its establishment in 1869.

The day involved several interactive workshops, including performing chromatography techniques by separating black ink on filter papers with water.  Next, the pupils had an opportunity to make lava lamps with oil, water, food dye and effervescent antacid.  Lastly the pupils were wowed with a colour change ‘blue bottle’ and ‘traffic light’ demonstration which involved the reduction of indicators with glucose.

Each session was concluded with a chance to raise questions to the Research Chemists about their work experience. “The 150th Anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table inspired the theme of this workshop.  The keen pupils learnt about Robinson Brothers and undertook a chemical elements quiz” said Dr Jagjit S. Khera, Senior Research Chemist.
