Placement year at Robinson Brothers - Jossy Odoemenam

Jossy has always enjoyed learning physics, chemistry and mathematics and with the influence of her uncle who is now a chartered Engineer, she decided that “it was the obvious choice” to study Chemical Engineering at Aston University.

Jossy likes having a blended working area where she has the opportunity to go out into chemical plants, for health and safety inspections, work outdoors in bunded areas where waste is kept, and then have her time to sit in the office carry out risk assessments and record audits.

Currently, Jossy works in the Safety Health and Environment (SHE) department and she splits her time working with Waste management and SHE. She is involved in documentation, audits, waste generation record keeping, risk assessments, the study of HAZOP processes when a need is identified and the development of chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for new and combined waste. She has also taken part in government regulatory visits with the Environmental Agency (EA) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Since starting her industrial placement Jossy has learned a lot of things including “How chemical waste is stored classified and split into different Control of Major Accidents Hazards (COMAH) ratings. With knowledge of the waste disposal hierarchy, I am aware that there is a precedent to disposal where we can evaluate if the chemical waste can be recovered for reuse or if it needs to be disposed of according to environmental regulations.”

As an aspiring chemical engineer, she decided to join the SHE team at Robinson Brothers as good chemical engineering happens as a result of good safety and she believes that she could further her skills in this area.

The advice Jossy leaves to future SHE placement students is. “To be open to this new opportunity and come with an open mind and willingness to learn as you’ll never know how transferrable health and safety is to multiple departments. You are going to be working with people of different skills, experience and competence, so build that professional rapport skill that is transferable all through your life. And to have a little notebook with all the acronyms as there is a lot to learn”.
